Environmental Committee

Several Years ago, in response to the interests of a number of residents concerned about the appearance of the neighborhood, the NNN formed an Environmental Committee. Since that time, the committee has been responsible for numerous neighborhood improvements including creating the Triangle Garden and also starting the Adopt-a-Block program. The committee has also been responsible for educating neighborhood residents on the responsibilities of Code Enforcement.

In the fall of 2003, in collaboration with the City of South Bend’s Division of Environmental Services began a pilot program to study the effect of using standardized containers as the trash receptacles for neighborhood households. Thus far, the feedback has been very positive – with their large capacity and secured lids, neighbors have seen an increase in litter in their alley ways and have noted that containers are no longer raided by raccoons or other vermin. The city hopes to extend this pilot program to all of the neighborhoods sometime in the spring or summer of 2005. The NNN is excited to have been the location for this pilot project.

The Environmental Committee meets the fourth Tuesday of every month here at the NNN offices, 1005 Portage Ave
